Magnesium and Medication Interactions: What You Should Know

Medications That May Interact with Magnesium

Certain Antibiotics

Magnesium may reduce the absorption of some antibiotics, including:

  • Doxycycline
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Other tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics

Tip

Magnesium is often taken 2–4 hours apart from these medications to help avoid absorption problems. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.

Bisphosphonates (Bone Medications)

Medications used for bone health, such as:

  • Alendronate
  • Risedronate

may be less effective if taken too close to magnesium supplements.

Tip

These medications are usually taken on an empty stomach, several hours apart from magnesium.

Blood Pressure Medications

Magnesium may slightly lower blood pressure by helping blood vessels relax. Because of this, it may enhance the effects of medications such as:

  • Amlodipine
  • Diltiazem

Tip

People taking blood pressure medications should monitor blood pressure carefully and consult their healthcare provider before starting magnesium supplements.

Gabapentin

Magnesium may reduce the absorption of gabapentin, a medication commonly used for nerve pain and seizures.

Tip

Taking magnesium and gabapentin at different times of the day may help reduce interaction risk.

Levothyroxine

Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine, a common thyroid medication.

Tip

Levothyroxine is usually taken on an empty stomach, while magnesium is typically taken several hours later.
