Setting your refrigerator to the correct temperature helps keep food safe, reduce energy waste, and improve the appliance’s efficiency.
The Ideal Refrigerator Temperature
For most households, the ideal refrigerator temperature is 3–4°C. This keeps food fresh while minimizing energy consumption. The temperature inside a refrigerator is not uniform:
- Lower shelves (coldest area): about 2–4°C
- Upper shelves and door compartments (warmest area): up to 5–6°C
To ensure food safety, the overall refrigerator temperature should remain at or below 4°C.
Refrigerator Temperature in Winter
During winter, when the ambient temperature is cooler, most refrigerators can maintain the correct internal temperature with a standard setting. Aim for 4°C inside the refrigerator. There is usually no need to make major adjustments unless your kitchen is unusually cold.
